$4.5 million awarded in nursing home-related death

By Jeff GermanLAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

The son of a woman who died following a brief stay at Life Care Center of Las Vegas has been awarded $4.5 million in damages and legal fees from a private binding arbitration panel.

Greg Halbrook had sued the nursing home, part of the national chain Life Care Centers of America, over the wrongful death of his mother, Eleanor Wildhaber, who spent less than three weeks there in December 2008 following a stroke.

Attorneys Robert Murdock and Marty Keach filed court papers Wednesday asking a federal judge to approve the binding arbitration award.

The panel found that Wildhaber had been a victim of elder abuse and neglect at the nursing home at 6151 Vegas Drive, near Jones Boulevard.

“They put profits over people,” Murdock said Wednesday.

Halbrook originally filed the lawsuit in District Court, but the case was moved to federal court.
